Therapy for Midlife Transitions & Life Changes

No one really warns you that midlife can feel like simultaneously holding it all together and—after waking up at 3 a.m. drenched in sweat—quietly questioning everything about your life.
On paper, things might look fine, or even good. But internally, you feel restless, exhausted, and unsure how you got here or why life suddenly feels so heavy.
You’ve always seen yourself as someone who can get shit done—capable, accomplished, reliable. Lately, though, anxiety, irritability, and bone-deep fatigue have you feeling stuck and unlike the person you’ve always known yourself to be

You really thought that once you were past diapers, toddler tantrums, and early-career dead-end jobs, you’d be soaring. But you’re not.
This stage of life has a way of stirring things up. Careers shift, relationships change, kids grow up, bodies change, and the expectations you once carried may no longer fit.
While you’ve gained wisdom in many ways, you may not yet know how to navigate this next chapter effectively. Things that used to work don’t seem to anymore, and many of the challenges you’re facing feel new—or more intense—than they did earlier in life.
Alongside the not-so-joyous physical and hormonal shifts of midlife, there’s a deeper sense of needing to reevaluate and realign with who you are now.
You’re sandwiched between worring about aging parents and trying to successfully launch your kids while at the same time considering career changes, questioning long-standing relationships, or grieving what was, what can’t be changed, or what never quite happened.
You never anticipated that in midlife thing would be quite this difficult. While these experiences are common, they feel deeply isolating and overwhelming.
You know you can’t unwind time or go back to how things once were—you just can’t clearly see the path ahead yet.
You didn’t expect that this stage of life could leave you feeling so untethered—questioning things you once felt certain about,
And you didn’t expect to find yourself wondering how you ended up here, or why the life you imagined feels so far away.
Therapy for Midlife Transitions & Life Changes
Imagine what it would be like to have greater clarity about who you are now and what actually matters to you—rather than constantly second-guessing yourself or wondering why things no longer feel like they fit.
To really know what to do about relationships that have been weighing on you, instead of feeling stuck between obligation, guilt, and resentment.
To feel supported as you care for aging parents while also navigating teenagers or launching young adult children, without feeling like you’re being pulled in every direction at once.
With the help of therapy for midlife transitions and life changes:
- You will learn to slow down, reflect, and make decisions that feel aligned with the person you’ve become not who you used to be or who others expect you to be
- Develop practical strategies for managing anxiety, irritability and emotional overwhelm
- The ability to move forward with more confidence and self-trust, knowing you don’t have to have everything figured out to take the next step
- You’ll feel more present and engaged in your life, instead of constantly questioning yourself or living on autopilot
- You’ll stop sidestepping the parts of your life that no longer fit and address them with greater clarity.
Therapy Process for Midlife Transitions & Life Change
Therapy supports you in navigating this stage of life with greater clarity, steadiness, and self-trust, while also helping you develop practical skills to manage anxiety, irritability, and emotional exhaustion. Instead of feeling driven by overwhelm, obligation, or expectation, you can move forward in ways that feel meaningful and aligned
Here is what to expect:
Free Consultation:
Book a free 15 minute no-obligation call so we can chat more about working together.
It’s my hope that even before your first session you’ll be confident that we can work well together. And, if I’m not the right person for you, you can expect that I will point you in the right direction, so you can get the help you need.
I want you to be able to ask any questions you have about therapy with me, and anything else on your mind so you’ll know we’ll be a good fit so that coming to therapy doesn’t feel as stressful.
First Session:
Our first session is 50 minutes and is focused on getting to know you, understanding what you’ve been through, and identifying what feels most important for you right now.
People are often really nervous to come to their first counselling session, so I want you know that it’s going to feel just like having a conversation with me.
By the end of this session, we’ll have a plan for the way ahead and you’ll leave with some new things to try out between sessions.
Ongoing Counselling Sessions:
For the first 2-3 sessions, I generally meet with people weekly so that we can build momentum in the right direction. At these sessions, I will check in with you to see how things have been going between sessions. You can expect each session to include talking about practical steps you can take to move in the right direction and learning new skills and strategies to get you there.
You can expect that I’ll be asking you to test these things out between visits so that you’ll be making progress between each time we see each other. Once you start feeling improvements, we will spread out our visits to give you the chance to take the skills we’ve worked on together and test them out as you live your life.
On average, I see individuals for 10-20 sessions over a period of time. Of course, this depends on you, your situation and how quickly change starts happening. But this is something we will talk about together because, ultimately, I want therapy to be something that adds to your life and doesn’t feel like one more stressful thing to add to your week.
More About Marcy Daniels MSW, RSW
As a Registered Clinical Specialist Social Worker with specific training in women’s mental health—and as a woman navigating midlife myself—I am well versed in the mood changes that can arise during this stage of life, including perimenopause. Many women are surprised by increased anxiety, irritability, emotional intensity, or exhaustion, even when their external circumstances haven’t dramatically changed. I’ll help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and develop practical skills to regulate your nervous system and manage these shifts without feeling overtaken by them.
Together, we’ll focus on helping you feel more grounded, clear, and steady so you can make decisions with greater self-trust, even when things feel uncertain. I support women in midlife to move from feeling emotionally overwhelmed, reactive, or depleted to feeling more confident in their ability to manage their moods and respond to life with intention.
I offer online therapy sessions via secure video using JaneApp, a privacy-compliant platform designed for healthcare services. I am licensed to work with clients who are physically located in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick at the time of their appointment.
Who Benefits Most from Therapy for Midlife Transitions & Life Changes
Therapy may be a good fit if you notice a constant sense of tension or unease, along with doubts about your ability to manage everything that’s being asked of you.
You will benefit from Therapy for Midlife & Life Changes if:
You spend much of your time mentally ahead of yourself—thinking about what needs to change, what might go wrong, or what you should be doing next—while feeling disconnected from the present.
You find yourself quietly questioning whether things will ever feel easier or more aligned than they do right now.
You’ve stopped engaging in parts of your life that once brought meaning or enjoyment because you’re emotionally exhausted, irritable, or overwhelmed.
You worry that you don’t have the capacity or resilience to keep up with the demands being placed on you—at home, at work, or in your relationships.
You carry a persistent sense of unease, tension, or heaviness that’s hard to explain, even when you can’t point to a single cause.
What Does Therapy Cost?
Individual therapy sessions cost $180/50 minutes
My services are covered by most insurance plans and I am able to direct bill to most insurance companies. I also offer a limited number of reduced fee spots through scholarship spots and Open Path Collective.
If direct billing is not available for your plan, you will receive a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider yourself or keep for income tax purposes.
I recommend you check your plan specifics before scheduling a session.
There are times when therapy with me might not be the best fit:
- You have been given the diagnosis of an eating disorder and have not received treatment for this
- You are actively suicidal or self- harming to cope
- You want a diagnosis of a condition or other workplace evaluations (ie. short term disability)
If any of these apply to you, I can provide you with the appropriate referrals.
